Shona Wilkinson, nutritionist at Dr Vegan, told The Sun: Celebrating over the festive season can often lead many of us to overindulge in alcohol, leaving us with that all-too-familiar feeling – the dreaded hangover.

A hangover is pretty much guaranteed when you drink too much alcohol, as excessive consumption leaves your body dehydrated, filled with toxins and operating on low blood-sugar.

The more you regularly drink alcohol, the more your liver loses its ability to regenerate and the worse you feel.

Instead of ordering takeaway, try incorporating some of these more unusual ingredients into your diet to help ease hangover symptoms this Christmas.

1. milk thistle

One of the primary causes of a hangover is the buildup of acetaldehyde.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, toxic byproducts of breaking down alcohol contribute to inflammation in the liver and other organs.

However, research suggests that certain naturally occurring chemicals may help reduce this inflammation, tackling at least one of the symptoms of a hangover.

Silymarin, found in the milk thistle plant, has strong anti-inflammatory effects, which may help reduce the effects of toxins.

Ms Wilkinson said: The milk thistle plant contains cynarin and silymarin which support the liver in producing bile, which is needed to help the body move toxins out of the liver and into the intestine for elimination. .

Milk thistle also helps reduce nausea and indigestion symptoms as it can help stimulate the production of digestive body fluids, including stomach acid and bile, contributing to normal gastrointestinal movement, reducing abdominal bloating. Helps prevent and reduce unwanted bloating in the stomach.

You can take milk thistle as a tea or add it to your diet with supplements.

However, no single chemical will deal with all the effects of a hangover, so milk thistle is not a hangover cure in itself.

Lemon peel is naturally high in antioxidants, including D-limonene and vitamin C.

A study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention found that lemon peels contain more antioxidants than grapefruit or tangerine peels.

A study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology showed that just one gram of ginger could reduce the feeling of nausea.

Ms Wilkinson said: A hangover can also make you feel nauseous.

Studies show that ginger has a calming effect on the digestive system and can reduce feelings of digestive discomfort, nausea, and vomiting.

Peppermint can also be used to ease digestive discomfort and reduce bloating after drinking it overnight.

Why not replace your morning coffee with lemon and ginger or mint tea instead?
